The singer, songwriter and artist Monica Törnell was named the 2024 scholar and winner of the Cornelis prize and is described as a very worthy winner in the spirit of Cornelis. The prize is now one million Swedish kronor and will be awarded on Cornelis Day on September 1 at the Moseback Terrace next to Södra Teatern in Stockholm.
This is what the jury, Stiftelsen Cornelis Vreeswijk’s memory, says:
”Monica is a singer with great breadth, she sings ballads and rock with exactly the same credibility, has written many memorable songs and done many fantastic interpretations of others’ songs. Monica has had several collaborations with Cornelis which also contributed to her national breakthrough in 1971.”
A radiantly happy Monica says in an interview that the award changes her life because it creates security.
Monica grew up in the small town, Söderhamn, next to the beautiful sea and still lives there now and turned 70 on June 3rd. I also grew up in the city at the same time as Monica. Cornelius met Monica in Söderhamn where he played at the Stadshotellet and after the show he went over to Monica’s father’s newly opened restaurant ”Tolvan” and there Monica sang 16 years young. Cornelius was so impressed and quickly began a collaboration with Monica and took her on tour. -”Warm congratulations Monica and I wish you all the best in the future”!

Sångerskan, låtskrivaren och konstnären Monica Törnell utsågs till 2024 års stipendiat och vinnare av Cornelispriset och beskrivs som en mycket värdig vinnare helt i Cornelius anda. Priset ligger nu på en miljon kronor och delas ut på Cornelisdagen den 1 september på Mosebacketerassen invid Södra Teatern i Stockholm.
Så här säger juryn, Stiftelsen Cornelis Vreeswijks minne:
”Monica är en sångerska med stor bredd, hon sjunger visor och rock med precis samma trovärdighet, har skrivit många minnesvärda sånger och gjort många fantastiska tolkningar av andras. Monica har haft flera samarbeten med Cornelis som också bidrog till hennes nationella genombrott 1971.”
En strålande glad Monica säger i en intervju att priset förändrar hennes liv genom att det skapar trygghet. Monica växte upp i den lilla staden, Söderhamn, invid det vackra havet och bor även där nu och fyllde den 3 juni 70 år. Jag växte också upp i staden samtidigt som Monica. Cornelius träffade Monica i Söderhamn där han spelade på Stadshotellet och efter showen gick han över till Monica,s pappas nyöppnade restaurang ”Tolvan” och där sjöng Monica 16 år ung. Cornelius blev så imponerad och inledde snabbt ett samarbete med Monica och tog med sig henne på en turné. -”Varmt grattis Monica och jag önskar dig all lycka framåt”!

Il premio ammonta ora a un milione di corone svedesi e verrà assegnato il 1 settembre il Cornelius Day presso la Moseback Terrace accanto al Södra Teatern di Stoccolma.

Monica, raggiante e felice, afferma in un’intervista che il premio le cambia la vita perché crea sicurezza. Monica è cresciuta nella piccola città, Söderhamn, vicino allo splendido mare e vive ancora lì adesso e ha compiuto 70 anni il 3 giugno. Anch’io sono cresciuto in città nello stesso periodo di Monica. Cornelius ha incontrato Monica a Söderhamn dove ha suonato allo Stadshotellet e dopo lo spettacolo è andato al ristorante ”Tolvan” appena aperto del padre di Monica e lì Monica ha cantato quando aveva 16 anni. Cornelius rimase così colpito e iniziò rapidamente una collaborazione con Monica e la portò in tournée. -”Congratulazioni di cuore, Monica e ti auguro tutto il meglio per il futuro”!
