We are now celebrating Valborg Fair Eve. This annual holiday is celebrated in Sweden, Germany and Finland, among others. In many places Walborg is celebrated by burning bonfires that were originally meant to scare witches. Valborg is also an academic holiday and is celebrated at colleges and universities. On this day, April 30, Sweden’s King Carl XVI also celebrates his birthday and this year he turns 77. Congratulations the king!

Vi firar nu Valborgsmässoafton. Denna årliga högtid firas i bland annat Sverige, Tyskland och Finland. På många platser firas Valborg genom att bränna bål som ursprungligen handlade om att skrämma häxor. Valborg är också en akademisk högtid och firas vid högskolor och universitet. Denna dag, 30 april, firar även Sveriges konung Carl XVI sin födelsedag och detta år fyller han 77 år. Grattis kungen!

Around in our country, Sweden, it has now been celebrated Walpurgis Night. Not least in the university cities of Lund and Uppsala, the feast of students is celebrated. The tradition originates in Germany and in Sweden we have celebrated Valborg already in the Middle Ages. All over our country were lit in May bonfires in the evening of last April. One reason was from the beginning of this tradition to scare witches who came riding on tassels and goat chefs. Even the king was celebrated yesterday when April 30 is his birthday. -Now we all hope that spring and warmth will come to us.

Runt om i vårt land, Sverige, har det nu firats Valborgsmässoafton. Inte minst i universitetsstäderna Lund och Uppsala firas högtiden av studenter. Traditionen har sitt ursprung i Tyskland. I Sverige har vi firat Valborg sedan medeltiden. Runt om i vårt land tändes maj-brasor under kvällen den sista april. En anledning var från början, av denna tradition, att skrämma bort häxor som kom ridandes på kvastar och getabockar. Även kungen firades igår då den 30 april är hans födelsedag. -Nu hoppas vi alla på att våren och värmen kommer till oss.

Walpurgis Night – Valborgsmässoafton – Notte di Valpurga

Here in the north of Europe and especially Sweden,

we celebrate just today,

the last day of April, that spring is here. 

Well, at least we imagine that spring has come 

 and will do so same day every year. 

We call it Walpurgis Night.

We light fires mostly of material we have accumulated

 in large piles, the material is from the gardens and the felling of forests. 

Usually begins the celebration withsomeone make a speech 

at the spring. Then spring is sung by a choir. The heat fromthe fires 

is needed here in the north when spring is delayed a while.

However, there is no doubt that the light has returned. In the north the

sun rises up at 03.56 and goes down at  21.06.  Soon the sun will 

show itself in the north around the clock. In central Sweden, the

light very soon will be around the clock and it’s a wonderful 

time after a fall and a winter with much darkness.

In Lund, where I live, the Walpurgis Eve will be celebrated in the city park 

and it will be at least  25 000 expectant people. The tradition continues, and we

celebrate the great Valborg in memory of her who was thought likely to 

affect soil fertility. The Celts celebrated this weekend as the start of summer and

the Germans celebrated Walpurgisnacht by developing a witches’ sabbath. 

The custom we have of lighting fires was introduced initially to eastern Sweden by Germans.

Rite of the spring  in Sweden, are originally a part of magical content, with the essential features 

was to ward off the evil that we thought would threaten the newly sown ground

and the recently released their cattle. The rite  as Valborg will

also affect the vegetation and animal vigor and fertility.

How it is with that today there is well divided on, 

but it is certainly something very 

special to stand next to a fire next to the sea and hear the flames flicker 

and how a choir spreads sweet songs through the

damp and chilly spring air late at night the last day of April.

Här i det norra av Europa och i speciellt Sverige firar vi just

idag den första april att våren är här. Ja, åtminstone inbillar vi oss att

våren kommit och att den kommer samma dag varje år.

Vi kallar det Valborgsmässoafton.

Vi tänder eldar mestadels av material vi samlat i stora högar, materialet är från

trädgårdar och från avverkningar av skogar. Oftast inleds firandet med att någon

håller ett tal just för våren. Sedan sjungs våren in av en kör.

Värmen från brasorna behövs här uppe i norr då våren dröjer ännu ett tag.

Däremot råder det inget tvivel om att ljuset kommit åter. I norr stiger solen

upp kl. 03.56 och går ner kl. 21.06 Inom kort kommer solen att i norr visa sig dygnet runt.

I mellersta Sverige kommer ljuset att vara dygnet runt och det är en

alldeles underbar tid efter en höst och en vinter med mycket mörker.

I Lund där jag bor kommer Valborg att firas i stadsparken och det

väntas komma 25 000

vårälskande och förväntansfulla människor. Traditionen håller i sig och vi firar ju

Valborg just till minne av henne som ansågs kunna påverka markens fruktbarhet.

sommarhalvåret och tyskarna firade

Walpurgisnacht genom häxtrons utveckling en häxsabbat. Den sed vi har

att tända eldar infördes till en början till östra Sverige av tyskar.

Vårriter i Sverige har ursprungligen ett delvis magiskt innehåll,

där de väsentliga dragen 

var att avvärja det onda som man trodde skulle hota den nysådda marken

och den nysläppta boskapen. Vårriterna som Valborg skulle även

påverka växlighetens och djurens livskraft och fruktsamhet.

Hur det är med den saken idag råder det väl delade meningar om,

men visst är det något

alldeles speciellt med att står invid en brasa intill havet

och höra hur lågorna fladdrar 

och hur en sångkör sprider vackra toner genom den fuktiga och

kyliga vårluften en sen kväll den sista dagen i april.
